System engineering design approach and virtual assessment of a new charging arm concept for LHC robotic TIM

Abstract System engineering (SE) methods and principles are nowadays widely adopted in the product development processes, especially industrial sector, where saving production time costs primary goals. This work describes an application of a particular SE methodology, V-model-based design, which system lifecycle is divided on basis graphical V-shaped scheme, called V-model. Following this approach, new concept charging arm for Robotic Train Inspection Monorail (TIM) Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire) has been developed. The current version affected by several issues limits that have led to necessity solution. Starting from first stages functional requirements (FRs) definition decomposition (left side “V”), implemented, order be tested its verification validation (right “V”). As part SE, process based virtual models simulations operation, rather than realization time-consuming expensive physical tests, even if final prototype also built some operative tests carried out it. These showed appears fulfill each one FRs overcome imposed previous version. future commissioning real operating condition location shall definitely validate product.
